About the book
|
Gerard Ukpan is a theatre director and performance poet from Nigeria. Born in 1976, Gerard first appeared on stage at the age of 4 and started writing poetry at 15. His first influences were music-backed storytelling and oral history at home. His knowledge was enriched by his father’s library - he says he “studied at his Father’s College”. Travelling between his hometown in Edo and Abuja led Gerard to reflect on the poverty, crime and other social issues facing many Nigerians. He decided to use poetry to find the elixir that would ease humanity’s ills to “penetrate the subconscious so that there will be a psychic revolution.” Gerard started performing poems professionally in 2002 in Abuja. He has also performed in London at the Brunei Gallery, the Albany, the Theatre Royal Bar and the Poetry Cafe. In 2004 he set up a theatre company in Abuja known as The Elixir of Mankind, the only performance poetry troupe in the city. It is geared towards fighting social ills through entertainment and recreation. Gerard’s stage name is The Soul Alkemyst. In 2005 Gerard and his friends started the Performance Poetry Academy. So far he has taught many performance poets and some of his students have won first prizes in poetry competitions. Gerard uses poetry to reach out to people. He writes about different aspects of life: the soul, divinity, love and oneness. Gerard’s poetry is a subtle way to penetrate the subconscious which is the home of all habits, both good and bad. "My Pen’s Legacy" is a powerful collection of mesmerising poems that show life’s winding road and its rhythmic journey – ups and downs, dreams and realities, happiness and sadness, love and hate, light and darkness. It explores the mysteries of life through poetry and reminds us of ‘who we are’, ‘where we are’ and ‘where we are from’. Free Download
